ALSET : Air Launch System Enabling Technology

Small satellite is increasingly becoming popular in worldwide in late years, with expectation of rapid growth of small satellite market in the future. Based on METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) policy to promote commercialization in space, Japan Space Systems started the research and development project called ALSET (Air Launch System Enabling Technology) from JFY2009.

ALSET project aims to build air launch concept to meet the future needs of small satellite market, and also, to demonstrate key technologies of the new launch system to validate its feasibility.
The following research and development were carried out from JFY2009 to 2012.
From JFY2013, technical development for dropping a rocket from an airplane and ignition attitude establishment of rocket are carried out.
A rocket dropping test will be carried out in U.S. test range using C-130 carrier aircraft.
